What is a Mid-Drive Motor?

A mid-drive electric bike features a motor positioned centrally within its drivetrain, specifically between the pedals. This motor is powered by a battery located in the same area.

Connected to the crank, the mid-drive motor utilises the bike's gears to enhance power and torque, providing improved control and efficiency. It is generally considered more powerful and efficient than a hub motor, with faster responsiveness. Mid-drive motors are particularly preferred for their excellent performance on hills and challenging terrain.

Unlike hub motors that directly drive the wheel, mid-drive motors transfer power through the bike’s drivetrain. The motor connects to the cranks and chainring, sending power to the rear wheel via the chain.

Benefits of Mid-Drive Electric Bicycles

  • Improved ride quality and extended range.
  • Adds an extra 15 to 25 kilometers of range compared to hub motor models.
  • Greater torque for climbing hills.
  • Enhanced control and stability on uneven surfaces.
  • Higher efficiency in elevated gears.
  • More customization options with different components.
  • Smaller and lighter than similarly powered hub motors.
  • Flexibility to choose any wheels, tyres, and cassettes.
